Landscapes

Living in New England, I have many beautiful landscape subjects to choose from. Our varied seasons give a different look to the same scene at different times of the year. Autumn and winter scenes make particularly good subjects for paintings, with their very distinct and bold colors.

Red Maples

5" x 7"

According to Yankee wisdom, when the maples start to turn red, it is a sure sign of the approach of autumn. NH is known for colorful fall foliage, hosting scores of "leaf peepers" each year from all over the world.

Autumn Reflections

As I was out driving the back roads one day looking for scenes to photograph for possible paintings, I came to this scene of colorful fall foliage and puffy white clouds reflected in the pond, just asking to be painted.

Golden Glow

I liked this view of Hillsboro, NH's Carr Bridge with the sunlit fall foliage contrasting with the shadowed arch of the bridge. Built by Scotch-Irish stonemasons in the 1800s, these bridges were constructed without mortar.

It's a beautiful summer day to be exploring the back roads of New Hampshire, blue sky, puffy clouds, and lots of green. All greens in this painting were mixed from various combinations of three primary colors.

Afternoon at the Lake

Liquitex® Acrylic on Gessobord™

It's early summer on Squam Lake. I took this photo from the Sandwich town beach in 1971, the first summer my parents owned their house in Center Sandwich, when we made the trip from Long Island almost every weekend, driving the 300+ miles after work.

Leaf Peeper's Delight

5" x 5"

Liquitex® Acrylic on Gessobord™

Every fall, visitors arrive from all over the world to see New Hampshire's spectacular fall foliage. Called "leaf peepers," they travel the state enjoying the rainbow of yellows, oranges, reds, and purples, against the blue of the autumn sky.

Summer Day

5" x 7"

Liquitex® Acrylic on Gessobord™

It's a perfect summer day, not too hot, not too humid. A few puffy white clouds dot the sky. The pond is cool and inviting. The trees and fields are a riot of green, all shades of green, from yellow green to blue green.

Country Church

5" x 7"

Liquitex® Acrylic on Gessobord™

Erected in 1848, the Methodist Church is located on Main Street, Center Sandwich, NH. Since 1960, it has been maintained jointly with another wooden church in the town as the Federated Churches.

First Congregational Church

11" x 14"

Liquitex® Acrylic on Gessobord™

Located in Hillsborough Center, NH, the First Congregational Church was established in 1769. Currently, Sunday services are held in July and August only. Although I have photos of this church in all seasons, I found this snow scene with the white church against the brilliant blue of the winter sky particularly appealing.

Snow Day

7" x 5"

Liquitex® Acrylic on Gessobord™

Many of us remember the thrill of waking up to a white world on a school day and finding out that school was cancelled — a snow day! A day to play in the snow or stay indoors curled up with a good book, eating cookies and drinking cocoa.

Winter Sunset

5" x 7"

Liquitex® Acrylic on Gessobord™

Here in New Hampshire our winter days are short, but we are often rewarded with beautiful sunsets. The snow picks up the colors of the sky, and the dark trees stand out against the color, creating a scene that is glorious to behold.

January Chill

9" x 12"

Liquitex® Acrylic on Gessobord™

It's one of those brilliantly cold, clear January days as I head out on my walk. A biting wind is blowing. I'm glad I have my "snuggies" on. As I pass this marshy area along Sand Brook in Hillsborough, NH, the wind is blowing the snow around, and I know I must paint this scene. I hurry home to get my camera so that I can take some photos.

December Sunrise

Liquitex® Acrylic on Gessobord™

I am not a morning person, so I rarely see the sunrise; however, back when I had a "day job" and was required to get up at the ridiculously early hour of 6:15, I was sometimes rewarded with a beautiful sunrise. This was one of them.

Peaceful Village

7" x 12"

Liquitex® Acrylic on Gessobord™

It's a cold December morning in that quiet period between Christmas and New Year's, and not a creature is stirring. Hillsborough Center is buried under a thick coat of snow. Everyone is at home, safe and warm sitting by the fire enjoying a hot beverage. This is winter in New England!

This was one of those perfect summer days — a good day for a road trip to drop off some new paintings at the gallery and take a few photos for future paintings. As I pulled out of the gallery's driveway, I looked across at this scene and knew it would become a painting.

I thought it would be fun to try to paint a scene on this odd-sized panel. I love the panoramic format and decided it would work well for this vista featuring these two barns. I also liked the juxtaposition of the light hitting the barns and the shadows coming across the foreground.

Located in picturesque Harrisville, NH, these houses originally served as dwellings for mill workers. Small by today's standards, they hark back to a simpler time, before we felt the need for master bedroom suites and media rooms.

Spring Day at the Pond

It's a beautiful spring day — a perfect day to sit at one of my favorite spots and enjoy the warm sun. I took this photo of Little Pond in Sandwich, NH, in 1971, the first year my parents owned their house in Center Sandwich, when we traveled from Long Island to New Hampshire almost every weekend.

Red Barn

Few things say New England like a venerable old barn. I pass this barn almost daily and have done many paintings of it. I particularly like the contrast of the red barn with the white snow and the green trees in the background.

This majestic pine stands proudly on a knoll near a picturesque old farmhouse and barn. I often pass it on my way into town, and it looked so pretty in the snow that I went home to get my camera so that I could take some photos for a possible painting.

One frosty morning on the way to meet some friends for breakfast, the clouds were breaking up after an overnight snowstorm, and the sun was sparkling on the snow. Having had the foresight to bring my camera, I snapped a few photos along the way.

Winter Morning in New England Series

It's still dark when I get my wake-up call at 6:20 am. I am making the ultimate sacrifice for my art as I venture out into the frigid January morning to take photos of the sunrise. My efforts were rewarded with many good subjects including this series of four paintings.
