Florals

I love to garden and have lots of flowers around my house. I take photos of the flowers using close-up filters, which gives a sharp image of the flower with a blurred background. When I paint the background, it is one of the few times that I don't paint detail, although in truth, I am painting what is actually in the photo!

Pretty in Pink #3(Poinsettia)

8" x 10"

Watercolor Pencil and Colored Pencil on Windberg Multimedia Panel

I had been looking at this poinsettia photo for some time, thinking about turning it into a painting. I decided that colored pencil on a panel, which I had learned about in a class that I took last year, would be the perfect way to render this beautiful plant.

Pretty in Pink #2 (Rose)

8" x 10"

Acrylic on Gessobord™

For the next painting in my "Pretty in Pink" series, I chose this beautiful rose. I had taken the photo at the Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls, MA, an abandoned trolley bridge that was turned into a garden in 1929 and is maintained by volunteers.

The photo this piece is based on has been waiting patiently in my photo album since 1982. Rather than including the flower and vase as depicted in the original photo, I decided to zoom in on a few of the petals, allowing me to really get into the details. For those of you too young to remember, the title comes from a song by the Cream, a British group that was popular in the 60s.
